Learning life skills is an important goal for the school district’s Connect programs for scholars with unique learning abilities, and they got a chance to expand those skills April 21 with a field trip to the airport.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has a program called Navigating MSP Airport, which was created in partnership with the Fraser organization and the Autism Society of Minnesota to allow people to practice the unique tasks that come with air travel. The program strives to make flying more accessible and comfortable for a wide range of travelers.
At the airport, the students used their school IDs to get “boarding passes,” then practiced going through security, riding a tram to a simulator, and practicing boarding, stowing carry-on luggage, buckling and deboarding the plane.
After the airport visit, students practiced their independent living skills by ordering lunch from a local restaurant before returning to the school.
