District's Family and Community Engagement group celebrates Black History Month with showcase event

District's Family and Community Engagement group celebrates Black History Month with showcase event

Park Center Senior High School hosted a variety of performers the evening of Feb. 8, when students, families and community members gathered for an evening of performances, dinner and community building.

Some of the performances included a singing of the Black National Anthem, which was printed on the backside of the showcase program for attendees to sing along if they wished, a drum and dance corps and various other dance groups, East African groups, a spoken word performance, a presentation by the school’s Black Student Union and more.

The district’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) program funded the event, and they partnered with community artists and organizations to provide food, entertainment and resources for families and Black-owned businesses.

“The FACE Black History Month celebration was planned in partnership with Park Center’s Black Student Union,” said FACE’s Vanessa Gill. “We hoped to celebrate Black excellence, Black art and to create a space where our community can enjoy each other and shine. We plan to grow this event and make it an annual celebration.”
