Park Center Senior High School’s Heritage Spanish classes have been reading the book “Our Shadows have Claws,” a collection of Latin American monster stories, and they got a fun surprise when their teacher, Valerie Neri, won an hour of the book editor’s time and 35 copies of the book through a book festival she attended.

The book’s co-editor, Amparo Ortiz, gave her virtual talk to Neri’s students, detailing her journey to becoming a writer and different paths she’s taken along the way. Ortiz is a Puerto Rican author, translator and college professor. Students had a chance to ask her questions about her life and the book at the end of her talk.

“A big focus for us in Heritage Spanish is reading for pleasure,” Neri said, adding that her classes have a mix of students who are more English-dominant and Spanish-dominant, so this book’s seamless blending of the languages helped everyone to meet in the middle.
